Globally, September 2024 ranked as the second-warmest September on record, sitting 0.73°C above the 1991–2020 average, accompanied by severe floods, intense heatwaves, and destructive hurricanes across multiple continents.
Major Extreme Weather Events
- Hurricane Helene (North America): Making landfall as a powerful
Category 4 system in Florida's Big Bend on September 26, Helene tracked
inland and devastated the southeastern United States. Extreme,
record-shattering rainfall-such as 781 mm in Busick, North
Carolina-triggered catastrophic inland flooding and landslides, heavily
disrupting power, water, and transport for weeks.
- Central and Eastern Europe Floods (Storm Boris): Mid-September
brought torrential, above-average precipitation and severe flooding to
Central and Eastern Europe due to Storm Boris, causing widespread property
damage and infrastructure strain.
- Yangtze River Basin Heatwave (China): The Yangtze River region
suffered a historically unprecedented September heatwave, with regional
average maximum temperatures reaching 31.53oC. Driven by expansions of the
Western Pacific Subtropical High and South Asian High, it exposed tens of
millions of children and vulnerable populations to extreme heat stress.
- Typhoon Yagi and Typhoon Krathon (Asia): Typhoon Yagi struck
parts of East Asia heavily in September, while Typhoon Krathon impacted
Taiwan and the Philippines later in the month, bringing damaging winds and
heavy downpours.
- Monsoonal Floods and Wildfires: South Asia experienced intensified monsoon activity (notably affecting Pakistan), while severe drought and persistent wildfire activity impacted parts of South America and the Iberian Peninsula.
